We are proud to invite you to the Eusko Etxea of New York and celebrate with us the 5th edition of “San Tomas Eguna” festivity on Saturday December 12th (for more information about this festivity see link below).
On December 12th the event will begin at 4 pm. From 4 – 6:30 pm we will organize games for children. Come with your family and be part of the party!
At 6:30 pm Olentzero (Basque equivalent of Santa Claus see link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olentzero) will arrive at Eusko Etxea. Olentzero will bring presents for all children. As in previous years, Olentzero will only offer one present per child of no more than $10 in purchase value. Each present should be wrapped and their recipient clearly identified.
After 7pm the bar will be open for drinks, and we will be serving our delicious Basque Cider "Sagardoa". You also will have the chance to taste our “pintxoak” (tapas) and “ogitartekoak” (sandwiches). There will be “txistorra” (traditional Basque sausage), xolomoa (pork loin), patata tortilla (potato omelette) and other specialty tapas available for purchase. Food will be available until 9:30 pm and the bar will remain open until closing.
In addition, we will have a raffle of farmer products. You will also have the opportunity to participate in some fun games. Beginning at 9:30 pm we will have a DJ playing a great selection of dance music.
Come join us! Let’s celebrate and enjoy San Tomas Eguna, our 2015 Christmas party together.

Eusko Etxeak San Tomas egunaren 5. edizioa ospatuko du abenduaren 12an. (bide batez, urteroko legez gure eguberri festa ere bilakatuko da).
Arratsaldeko 4-etatik 6:30etara, haurrentzako jolas eta jokoak izango ditugu. Etorri zure familiarekin eta hartu parte arratsaldeko festa honetan.
Arratsaldeko seiterdietan Olentzero iritsiko da Euskal Etxera. Aurreko urteetan bezala olentzerok gehienez $10-eko opari bana emango dio haurra bakoitzari. Opariak garbi izendatuta eta paperez bilduta egon beharko dute.
7etatik aurrera: taberna irekia egongo da, besteak beste gure sagardo gozoa edateko. Nola ez, txistorra jateko aukera ere izango da: pintxo bezala eta ogitarteko bezala zerbitzatua. Eta horrekin batera, xolomoa, patata tortila, eta okasiorako prestatuko diren zenbait pintxo berezirekin gozatzeko aukera izango dugu.

I write to inform you that on Sunday December 6th at 12:00 pm we will hold a special meeting at Eusko Etxea of New York (EENY) to vote on three very important items. As we informed you during the 2015 Aberri Eguna we have hired a lawyer to put forward a case to obtain 501c3 status for EENY. As a 501c3 organization, EENY could operate as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization and receive tax-deductable donations. To this end, it is imperative that we amend our original 1913 title of incorporation with updated language that better reflects the current goals of our club as a Basque cultural organization. In addition, we need to update our bylaws in a manner consistent with 501c3 status. Our lawyer has prepared an updated title of incorporation and bylaws for us to vote on. Finally, we also need to vote on a memorandum of understanding to establish a formal collaboration between the Basque International Cultural Center (BICC) and EENY.
During the meeting we will provide details on these documents, and answer all your questions, before we vote on them. It goes without saying that we need your participation in this special meeting that will define the future of our club as a Basque cultural organization in the XXI century. To participate in this meeting you should be in good standing with the club and have paid your membership dues. If you cannot attend the meeting please make sure to designate a proxy.

The Fall is Here!
The EENY has organized another hiking day-trip for Sunday November 15th. This time we will head to Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey, to do the Forest View Trail / Closter Dock Trail Loop from Alpine Headquarters (40 min bus ride from Port Authority Bus Terminal, NY). The loop hike combines a walk along the top of the Palisades with a steep descent to the river and a stroll along the river, passing several outstanding viewpoints and the Women’s Federation Monument. This event is free and only for EENY members. We will be hiking for around 3h. There will be an optional shorter route for members that want to bring their kids. You will have to bring your own food and drink for the day. We also recommend you to bring proper hiking shoes. The day-trip will be re-scheduled if the weather is not good for hiking. "Brock in a Dress" (A Sneak Peek) is a collection of photographs by Basque-American photographer Koitz, in collaboration with Brock Forsblom and Anthony Hadaway. These photographs of Brock were taken over a period of 15 months in New York City and Fire Island. "Brock in a Dress" is an on-going project.
This is what Koitz says about this project: “People who’ve seen the photographs from "Brock in a Dress" have expressed a variety of opinions, and there’s certainly no right or wrong way to view them, but I would say that we consciously aimed to explore gender identity and, perhaps more importantly, to challenge gender stereotypes. As the photographs show, Brock is wearing only a dress, with no ‘female’ accessories or shoes (and actually, when he has shoes on, they are always his own.) In all these photographs, the dress is the key element, as is also the relationship between Brock and the location. The dress allows him to alter his persona and then to interact with the world in a different, quite particular way. This alteration takes the man out of his standard environment; it allows him to ‘escape’ his body and thus take on the persona of a character, depending in large part on the dress that he’s wearing.”

We will charge $5 per paella serving and beverages will be available for purchase at the bar.

This event is free and only for EENY members. Depending on the number of people, we will use private or public transportation. We will be hiking for around 6h. There will be an optional shorter route for members that want to bring their kids. You will have to bring your own food and drink for the day. We also recommend you to bring proper hiking shoes. The day-trip will be re-scheduled if the weather is not good for hiking. If you want to join please send an email to Leire Areizaga: [email protected] . This is an unique opportunity to meet senators Aiartza and Anasagasti!. Dinner reservations cost $40 per person (including wine).

Durangotarrak izatez, Luhartz-ek azken 20 urtetan Euskal Herriko bazter guztiak dantzatzen jarri dituen erromeria talde ospetsua dugu. 2000. urtean sortua, Taberna Ibiltaria, Bizkaiatik datorkigun sekulako abesbatza martxosoa dugu. Zihur gaude bi taldeen artean sekulako giroa izango dugula Euskal Etxean.

The Eusko Etxea of New York is proud to invite you to an exploration of Basque cuisine with celebrated chef Aingeru Etxebarria (please see the flyer for more details). Aingeru has received numerous gastronomic awards and is a member of the prestigious culinary society Euro-Toques. A protégé of renowned chef Karlos Arguiñano, Aingeru is also an entrepreneur and has his own culinary school and catering service in Bilbao. We are grateful to the Delegation of the Basque Government in the US for giving us the opportunity to enjoy Aingeru’s cooking. The dinner menu will include his own creations based on the highest available ingredients and be accompanied by a specially paired wine selection.
This special dinner is part our ongoing fund rising efforts to continue with the renovation of the first floor of our club. Space will be limited to 20 people and the cost will be $140 per person (this price includes wine). Basques have always been fond of mountain hiking. The EENY has organized a hiking day-trip around Harriman State Park, 1-hour drive from NYC, on Sunday May 3rd. This event is free and only for EENY members. Depending on the number of people, we will use private or public transportation. We will be hiking for around 4-5 hours. You will have to bring your own food and drink for the day. We also recommend you to bring proper hiking shoes. The day-trip will be re-scheduled if the weather is not good for hiking. Euskaldunek mendizaletasunagatik eta mendi-ibiliengatik betidanik sentitu izan dute griña, gure herrialdeko orografia bereziak bultzatua. Hain zuzen, azken hamarkadetako Europako alpinista garrantzitsuenetako batzuk euskaldunak dira. Tirria honek bultzata NY-eko euskal etxeak mendi irteera bat antolatu du Harriman inguruko parajetara, NY hiritik ordu betera, igandean maiatzak 3-an. Mendi irteera hau bazkideentzat soilik izango da. Jende kopuruaren araberan, garraio pribatu edo publikoa erabiliko dugu hara joateko. Mendi buelta gutxi gora behera 4-5 ordutakoa izango da. Zuen ardura izango da eguneko jan eta edaria eramatea. Mendirako oinetako egokiak ere eramatea gomendagarria da. Eguraldia lagun ez badugu irteera beste egun batetarako utziko da. Dakizuenez aurreko urteko ekitza garrantzitsuenetako bat giza katea izan zen. Aurtengo ekintzak “Erabakia ehuntzen” izena izango du; guztion artean jositako milaka ohial zatik boto-kutxa erraldioi bat osatuko dute.
Aste honetan 25cmx25cm(1ftx1ft) tamainuko ohial zatiak banatzen hasiko dira Euskal Herrian zehar. Ohial puska hauek norberaren borondatea adieraziko dute, bakoitzak idatzitako mezu baten bitartez eta Apirilaren 25an, Joste Egunean, guztion artean, ohial puskak elkartu eta elkar josi egingo ditugu. Azkenik Ekainak 21ean Ehuntze Eguna ospatuko da eta Euskal Herriko hiriburu nagusienetako estadioetan elkartuko gara gure etorkizuna ehuntzeko asmoz. Donostia, Bilbo, Gasteiz eta Iruneako estadioak gure borondateekin beteko ditugu. Ekintza honen helburua estadio bakoitzean, elkar jositako ohial zatiekin, boto-kutxa erraldoiak eraikitzea da. New Yorken ere ekintza honetan parte hartzea nahi dugu, horregatik datorren apirilaren 25ean Euskal Etxean elkartu eta ohial puskak elkar josiko ditugu. The Eusko Etxea of New York would like to invite you to the presentation of the book “The Endgame for ETA: Elusive Peace in the Basque Country” by Teresa Whitfield, a senior advisor and fellow at the Center on International Cooperation at New York University.
The presentation will take place at Eusko Etxea of New York on Saturday, April 18th at 5 pm. This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the presentation.
After the reception at 7 pm there will be a dinner at $40 per person. The endgame for ETA offers a compelling account of the long path to ETA’s declaration of a definitive end to its armed activity in October 2011. Teresa Whitfield argues that while negotiations with ETA did not prosper, a form of ‘virtual peacemaking’ was an essential complement to robust police action and social condemnation. Together they helped to bring ETA’s violence to an end and return its grievances to the channels of normal politics.
The research of Teresa Whitfield focuses on the dynamics of internal conflict, peacemaking, mediation and United Nations peace operations. She has published widely on these subjects and in March 2010 was awarded a grant by the United States Institute of Peace to research and write a book examining efforts to end the Basque conflict in Spain.
